What is hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is an excellent choice for establishing lawns, controlling erosion, and managing project sites by spraying a mulch/seed slurry onto a prepped seedbed, such as lawns, athletic fields, and reclamation projects. It is cost-effective, often half or less of laying sod on a lawn. Hydroseeding yields great results with proper watering and post seeding care.

Benefits of Hydroseeding

  • Cost Effective
  • Environmentally Friendly
  • Erosion Control
  • Custom Seed Mixes
  • Fast Germination
  • Moisture Retention

9 days later, germination is in full swing!

What do I do after it is seeded?

It is important to stay off the lawn to allow the seed to get established. Follow the Hydroseeding Care steps below and wait patiently as your new lawn needs time to grow.

Hydroseeding Care

Before application, make sure your sprinkler system is running and all heads are operating correctly, with appropriate coverage.
After the seed application:
  1. Wait 24-36 hours after seeding to begin watering.
  2. Then, start a regular watering regiment. The goal now is to get moisture to the mulch and seed, not letting it dry out but also not drowning the seed. Frequency and duration depends on soil type. As an example, heavier soils can more easily allow water to pool on the surface, causing germination issues. Usually, though, 7-10 minutes, 3-4 times a day. We're happy to consult with you to make a plan.
  3. Mow the lawn once it is 3-3.5" high, cutting it to a height of 2.5-3". This will usually be 3 or 4 weeks after seeding, maybe longer depending on the season and type of grass. You do not want to take a lot off, as that increases plant stress. Also, be sure your mower blades are sharp, poor cutting also leads to unneeded stress at this stage.
  4. At this point, reduce the watering to once a day.
  5. If possible, mow frequently for at least 3-4 weeks, encouraging the grass to grow horizontally and develop a denser stand. Be sure to alternate patterns to reduce wear from you and the lawnmower.
  6. Reduce watering to 2-3 times per week around 2 months after seeding.
  7. Keep traffic to a minimum for at least 2 months.
  8. Do not apply herbicides for at least 2 months. After 3 months, you can get on a maintenance schedule of your choice!

23 days after seeding, this lawn is looking great! It is not ready yet for heavy traffic, however.

How soon will I have a lawn?

Many factors go into how soon the seed will sprout, including species, time of year, weather, soil temperature, etc. Most lawns will begin to germinate in about 7 days. First mowing can be within 3 weeks, but commonly is at 4 weeks or later. And it is best to minimize traffic on the lawn for at least 2 months. This allows the lawn to establish a solid root system so it can handle traffic.

This seeding project included reestablishing a lawn after an addition on the house. This picture shows immediately after the hydroseeding application. The date was June 16.
Here is the same project on June 25, 9 days after seeding application, where seed is beginning to germinate.
This is 23 days after seeding! The date of the picture was July 9. The new turf is not ready for traffic yet, but it is looking great! If you have good irrigation, you can seed anytime throughout the summer.
Here is a small project that was hydroseeded after removing a large thicket of brush. This was a fall seeding, seeded on Sept 15.
Here is that project on Oct 1, 16 days later!
This was a fall seeding, pushing the end of the seeding window. Thankfully, it stayed warm late that year and they saw excellent results!
17 days later, they already had a great stand!
This project was seeded in the middle of the summer, on July 2. The heat helps the seed germinate very quickly. With adequate water, you can see very good results pretty quickly even in the heat of the summer!
And here it is after 6 weeks!
